2013 – Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh

The Women’s Center and Shelter provides sanctuary from domestic violence for women and their children within a supportive community where confidentiality is guaranteed. It was founded in 1974 by Ellen Berliner and Anne Steytler and was one of the first six shelters in the United States for battered women. Since that time, WC&S has been at the forefront of the Battered Women’s Movement, creating and implementing innovative and effective programming aimed at preventing domestic violence and providing services to domestic violence victims.

 

 

 

2012 – Women on Boards Program CommitteeWomen of Boards Committee

The Zonta Club of Pittsburgh honored the Women on Boards (WOB) Committee of the Executive Women’s Council of Greater Pittsburgh as the 2012 Women Who Make a Difference. WOB is a strategic initiative that works to achieve more female representation on public, corporate, and influential not for profit organization board of directors.

 

2011 – Christine Haas, Executive Director of the Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s HealthChristine Haas, 2011 Women Who Make a Difference Winner

When the Midwife Center, the only out-of-hospital birthing center in Western Pennsylvania threatened to shut down, Christine Haas knew she had to get involved. She began as a founding member of the board for the new Center, and moved quickly to president of the board. Since 2002, Christine has held the position of executive director of the Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s Health.
